When I found out I would be the DigiTech Specialist last year this was one of the first things I grabbed because I knew my voice wasn’t going to cope with 😮 instructions
😮 stopping small humans from accidentally breaking iPads
😮 getting them to stop playing with said iPads and listen to next instructions!!

Wireless Doorbell from @bunnings.. bonus that it plays Disney tunes!! When I press the button the kids have until the end of the tune to be looking ready to listen. During that time I usually lock their iPads with Apple classroom as well so that gets their attention if they somehow haven’t heard the doorbell 😂

Sticky Wall name recognition!

Could be used as a sign in as they come into class or a separate name recognition activity!

If you have no idea what I’m talking about with sticky walls, check out my video from last night... you just need clear contact!

I made the name labels using my Watercolour Splash Label Pack 😍 You will need to have the ones that you will stick on laminated or glued onto something like a wooden disc as cardboard won’t come back off the contact!

Know me before you teach me... this was what we called the first two weeks of school at my last school.

Because those first few weeks are about making kids feel safe, engaged and happy.... not assessing them. I understand that some schools have you assess from day 1 and I understand that it’s not your choice... but if you have the choice, don’t assess them in the first week at least!

Here is my perspective on this, coming especially with a special needs parent hat on... Imagine going to school already full of anxiety because you don’t know what to expect or anxious that you won’t do it right. Now walk into a room full of people you don’t know, a teacher you don’t know, it’s loud, there is a lot going on, things are having to be repeated a lot and so you’re not always sure what the actual instruction is or what you’re meant to be doing. Now you get handed a piece of paper that you can’t read all of and your teacher says ‘can you fill in the missing letters here?’ Your immediate thoughts are ‘If I’m getting this it must be grade 1 work which means I should be able to do it because now I’m in grade 1 but I can’t do it so grade 1 is too hard for me!’

A neuro-typical child is going to have a hard time with this, a neuro-diverse child will likely lock on this thought and it won’t be a short time before they can be convinced otherwise

Want to get to know your kids? Put out varying choice activities... watch what they go to, watch how they interact with the activity and other children, as they are playing talk to them... they’ll soon tell you if they know what sound the s makes or if they’re making a pattern with the gems... and that is going to be a far better experience for them 💜

Save this one for part of your morning calendar routine! We would sing this one and our days of the week (sang to the tune of Addams Family) after we had done our Weather Chart.

The actions were made up by my class when I had grade 1 to match the seasons

First Day/First Week back activity ideas! (and the rest of the year!)

These are the types of activities that I would have set up for when children arrive on the first day of school. My criteria for any these activities...
🌻 engaging
🌻 hands-on
🌻 fun
🌻 inviting
🌻 open ended
🌻 don’t require instructions

When a child walks into your room you want to capture their interest, you want them to be able to do an activity independently while you are assisting children who might be having a tough time and you’ll need to be able to talk to parents.

These are not rotations.. the children simply choose the activity that they would like to do and can move to another if they would like to (this is also how I would have these types of activities set up during the school day with the same expectations.. more about that later!)

By using placemats (1m x 1m grass square from Bunnings and you’ll get 9 placemats!) you are giving them a zone to work in and visually showing them their equipment... this is fantastic for a lot of children especially our neuro-diverse mates because it means that they don’t have to deal with sharing right in that moment (there’s a lot of other stuff going on!)

☀️ Pom-Pom grab.. transfer the Pom Poms into the basket or container using tools or their hands
🌈 Nuts and Bolts - these are from @kmartaus and were out almost everyday when I had prep. I would have 4 tubs if I as back in class!
☀️ Sorting. Highly recommend a sorting activity of some sort. It is calming and it is open ended. If you have different themes of these counters (most schools have these) tip them all out to give them more sorting categories. Wooden tens frames are from @worksatplay
🌈 Hair tie towers... paper towel holders and small hair ties.. another class favourite!
☀️ Puzzles... doesn’t matter what type!
🌈 Playdough is another great one!

I personally don’t do blocks on the floor for that time unless it is in its own little nook... it becomes a trip hazard! LEGO or duplo on the table is a great alternative

Oh playdough 🙌🏼 you are the number 1 thing to have on hand in the classroom you little lifesaver!!

You save us when the children have had enough, when we’ve had enough, when it’s hot, when it’s raining, when we’re teaching maths or letters and when we’re in prep or year 6 (yes grade 6 children love playdough!!)

I make my own playdough but if that isn’t your thing, store-bought will do! I use the no-cook recipe from @imaginationtree.. if anyone has a great way to make gluten free then please pop it in the comments! These photos are all from Term 1 in Prep.. all the same batch of playdough.

Covid means that you may have to think about individual tubs or bags but please, if you are prepping anything for school, add this to the top of your list... it will save you more than once!!
